How To Join Us
Candidates for the USA Honors College go through a multi-stage selection process:
1 - Qualify
Because ours is a competitive program, and there are lots of applicants to screen, students must first meet some baseline criteria to be considered for the program:
An ACT Composite score of 27 or above (or SAT equivalent)
A High School GPA of at least 3.5
Also must be US citizen or permanent resident, and graduate from HS in the same year that you seek to start the program.
Beyond these basics, understand that we are looking for a special kind of student. Someone who isn't just smart, but creative, not just a member of groups, but their leader, not just ambitious, but interested in serving others, not only focused on their goals, but broadly curious about everything. If this describes you, please read on...
2- Apply to South
Applicants to the Honors College at South must first apply, and be admitted to, the University, usually in the Fall of their Senior Year in HS.
You can do that here:
3 - Apply to the College
After being accepted to the University, you must then apply to the Honors College via the JagSpot system. The priority deadline to receive first and full consideration is December 15th, 2017. Applications submitted after the priority deadline will be considered on a rolling basis.
In addition to providing additional data about you and your academic background, this involves arranging for two letters of recommendations from teachers or other people who are in a good position to provide an objective evaluation of your abilities, and writing a short (500-word) essay around the one-word prompt provided in the application.
The resulting application files will then be reviewed by honors faculty and staff, with at least 3-4 people independently reviewing each candidate.
4 - Interview
Based on these reviews, we will invite about 100 candidates to come to campus in mid-February for on-campus interviews with groups of faculty and advanced honors students (provisions for those who can't make it). Based on these interviews, the strongest candidates will receive an offer of admission and scholarship, usually within a month after the interview.
5 - Acceptance
If you receive an offer and choose to accept it, you will begin with the College at the start of the next Fall Semester.
